Weekends give you the perfect chance to take up those tasks you’ve been pushing forward all week. You can take this time to spruce up your home or tackle some of those lingering fix-ups. Can’t think of what to fix in your free time? Well, you’re at the right place.

We’ve compiled a list of fix-ups and tasks we all postpone during the week. The best part is that they’re all fairly quick and achievable, so you can make your home more appealing without having to work all weekend. From fixing your lawnmower to patching up wall holes, the weekend is the best time to get these tasks out of the way.

Organize Your Closet

We’ve all been there, refusing to hang up our fresh laundry because our closet is already a mess. If that sounds like you, it’s time to organize your closet and get rid of the piles of fresh laundry in your bedroom. Start by getting rid of the items you don’t need anymore.

Some clothes may seem good enough on their own, but if you can’t make an outfit out of them, it’s best to donate or resell them. Then, you can sort and declutter the ones you intend to keep. You can classify them into piles of dresses, t-shirts, jeans, etc., or into piles of casual wear, workwear, etc.

Service Your Lawnmower

Servicing your lawnmower doesn’t mean you have to pay a professional to do it. With the right guidance, you can even fix some of the issues at home. For example, if the engine is idling or you’re having trouble starting your lawnmower, the problem probably lies in your carburetor.

You can take this opportunity to clean your carburetor. You’ll need to remove the air filter and housing before spraying carburetor cleaner on the unit. Once cleaned, reassemble the carburetor and test the engine. You can perform the same process if you’re facing issues with your motorcycle or car.

Clean Out the Kitchen Pantry

It’s pretty easy to let your kitchen pantry pile up with expired products and half-empty jars. When the weekend rolls around, you can allot some time to clean this space of your kitchen. Start by emptying the pantry and getting rid of everything expired.

Then, you can sort similar items in groups, such as canned goods, dry goods, snacks, baking supplies, etc. Before you start putting things back, don’t forget to wipe down the shelves and cupboards with cleaner and a damp cloth.

Fix Leaky Faucets

There’s always one or two leaky faucets in the house, and the weekend is the best time to get to them. Although it may seem like you need to hire a plumber, you can actually do it yourself with minimal effort and no money.

You’ll need an adjustable wrench, screwdriver, and a replacement washer, if necessary. Before starting, turn off the water supply with the shut-off valve. Then, disassemble the faucet by removing the retaining clip. If the faucet is cracked or worn down, replace it with a new one.

Patch Up Wall Holes

One wall hole is barely noticeable, but they can quickly add up before it seems like your whole wall needs a redo. Luckily, wall holes are incredibly easy to patch up, taking a few minutes of your time. All you need is wall filler, a putty knife, sandpaper, paint, a paintbrush, and a damp cloth.

Wipe the area around the hole using a damp cloth before applying the wall filler with the putty knife. Once dry, sand the surface and touch it up with paint, feathering the edges to blend in with the wall.

Service Your HVAC System

Is your AC not cooling your home the way it used to? Take the weekend opportunity to service it and get it back to its prime performance again.

In most cases, the issue lies in the air filter, so you can clean or replace them if necessary. You’ll notice a significant difference in the performance right away. You should also clean its air vents and registers, as well as the outdoor unit. The condensate drain line could also be clogged, impeding airflow.

Update Lighting Fixtures

If you’ve noticed that your home’s ambiance is dull or unwelcoming, it’s time to update the lighting fixtures. Before doing so, you need to consider your lighting needs. Are you looking for bright overhead lighting or subtle ambient lighting?

This is also a great opportunity to install dimmer switches, letting you adjust the lighting where desired, such as in your bedroom or living space. Don’t forget to update outdoor lighting fixtures as well. Upgrade porch lights, pathway lights, and security lights for curb appeal and safety.

Clean and Declutter Your Garage

The garage is often the most neglected space in the home. Before you know it, it’s piled up with junk and old appliances you’ll never use. If you have a free weekend, it’s the perfect time to clean and declutter your garage.

If the weather is pleasant, empty the garage’s content out into your driveway so you can sort through with ease. First and foremost, get rid of the things you don’t need and set aside those you could repair easily. To make sure your garage stays organized in the future, invest in cupboards, shelves, and pegboards.

Inspect and Clean Gutters

Lastly, you can’t forget to inspect and clean your gutters. It sounds like a gross and time-taking job, but you’ll thank yourself once you’re done.

Put on your gloves and take out all the debris and leaves. After flushing the gutters, inspect the downspouts for clogs. Then, make necessary repairs using gutter sealant to get rid of cracks and holes. Lastly, install gutter guards or screens to prevent debris in the future.

Conclusion

Tackling small fix-ups during the weekend is a surefire way to keep your home clean and functional. This way, you won’t have to dedicate a specific day only to odious fixing tasks, which can seem overwhelming in bulk. By getting them out of the way one at a time, you’re much more likely to complete your list.
