The roof is certainly one of the most important features in any building, especially residences. It adds many benefits, including security, protection against the weather, and even beauty.

A damaged roof is a problem that causes many headaches. Therefore, it is essential to have the proper roof installed. However, how can you know which roof is the right one for you?

With so many options available, getting lost in the sea of roofs is easy. Let’s see some tips for choosing the right roof that will help you understand more about this crucial aspect of your home.

Roof Layering

Roof Layering is the right Choice

Roof layering involves installing a new roof over the old one. This is a common procedure among those who want to spare some dollars. However, is it safe?

Well, quite some problems occur when you follow this procedure since the old roof may be very damaged, and if so, your new roof won’t do any good besides looking good.

Problems with water infiltration, for example, will keep happening. Also, roofs are not exactly a light thing, even considering a house’s structure. Adding the weight of a new roof to the weight of the already installed roof can bring several difficulties.

Therefore, it is safer to remove the older roof before installing a new one.

Roof Durability

Always think about the durability of the roof you are planning to install. If you don’t intend to live in the house for many years after the installation, you can pick something cheaper that won’t last that long.

However, if you are going to install a roof in your forever home or a house that you plan to live many decades, it is much better to install a durable roof.

Resistance is Vital

Whether you’ll live in the house for several years or not, always choose a resistant roof. This aspect is essential for your and your family’s safety. The roof needs to be resistant to weather and fire.

Be aware of the weather conditions of where you live. If it rains or snows heavily, choose a roofing material resistant to heavy snow, rainfall, and so on. The fire-resistant roofs are categorized from category A to category C, with A being the most resistant and C the less resistant. Never choose a roof that isn’t categorized.

Choose the Proper Roof Material

For many, choosing the roof material is the hardest part of installing a new roof. With so many options of materials, it is a difficult choice to make. To decide, you need to think what are your priorities. Is it to save money? Safety? Durability? Appearance? Pick them carefully and choose the roof that fits them the most.

Wood shingles and shakes

Typically made from southern pine, cedar, or redwood, wood shingles are made by machine, while the shakes are handmade. They are a great option for those who enjoy the natural look of wood, but it isn’t the best choice regarding fire resistance.

Metal

Common in commercial and industrial buildings, metal roofing is growing in the residential roofing industry. Its best quality is its durability since they last a lifetime.

You can choose between galvanized steel, aluminum, copper, zinc, or tin. It is relatively lightweight but can be a problem in places near the ocean due to corrosion, although there is corrosion-resistant aluminum.

Asphalt shingles

They are the most popular type of roof and usually the least expensive. Made of fiberglass mat topped with asphalt and mineral granules, asphalt shingles are resistant to high winds and can last many decades.

Tiles

Made of concrete or clay, tiles are famous for their appearance and durability, available in many shapes, styles, and colours. The installation is labor-intensive, and it can be quite heavy.

Be aware that there are several other roof materials options to choose from, so make sure to research properly.
