Believe it or not, according to the United States Department of Labor, 5,333 workers died on the job in 2019.

One of the most dangerous jobs is construction work. Between the tools, materials, general construction site, and job description, there are many places and ways to get injured. This doesn’t mean they have to happen, though.

There are measures you can take to keep yourself and the building site safe.

Wear the Right Protective Gear

One of the most important ways to stay safe on a construction site is to wear the proper gear for each task.

This gear may include a hard hat, gloves, and goggles a Hi-Viz vest is always recommended to keep everyone visible. Even ear protectors can help around loud tools.

Make sure that everyone on the site is wearing the necessary gear at all times. It can help to have a once-over check at the beginning of the day.

Use Indicative Signs

Another tip for staying safe on a building site is to use and watch out for signs. Construction signs should be clear and indicate dangerous areas and the threat they present.

Using signs will ensure that everyone knows which places to avoid and that they take the necessary precautions in dangerous zones. Examples of signs are those that indicate danger from falling objects or chemicals.

Signs can also be used to protect the general public if construction is near sidewalks or roads.

Inspect Tools Often

Construction tools are one of the more dangerous aspects of the job. Used for forcing materials together or cutting them up, it’s easy to see how a malfunctioning tool could cause a problem.

Schedule a frequent and regular time to check all tools for any signs of malfunctioning. This will help catch problem tools before they pose a threat to life or limbs.

Keep It Clean

A construction site is messy by nature, and you’re not going to be able to get rid of all the dirt. Still, keeping a well-organized site can save lives.

Consider assigning specific locations for tools and materials, and don’t let employees leave tools unattended. Keeping the ground clear is also a good idea to limit the chance of tripping.

Conduct Inductions for New Staff

Any time there is a new person coming on the job, it’s important to conduct an induction.

An induction is an introduction to the job and job site, so they know everything they need to know about navigating the area safely. Go over the safety materials, designated areas, signage, and all other safety rules.

Keep Your Building Site Safe

Construction is a dangerous job, but it doesn’t change the world’s need for it. Make sure to use safety gear and clear signs, inspect tools, and keep the building site as clean as possible.

If you work on a construction site, implementing these policies will help keep you and your fellow employees safe.
